Note:‎
The livestock liable to Zakat are those let to pasture freely, not the ones ‎bred for trade.‎

The Majority of Scholars including the Shafi'i, the Hanafi, and the Hanbali ‎scholars stipulated that the pasturing livestock are liable to Zakat, unlike the ‎livestock bred for trade, which are not liable to Zakat. A Hadith recorded by Al-‎Hakim reads that Amr Ibn Hazm narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said, "For ‎every five pasturing camels, one goat should be given as Zakat." Abu Dawood ‎reported that Ali Ibn Abi Talib narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said, ‎ ( ‎"Cows bred for trade are not liable to Zakat."‎ ).

The Maliki scholars hold a different opinion as they regard both the freely ‎pasturing livestock and the livestock bred for trade liable to Zakat.‎
