10.8 Million Dirhams of Revenues Collected by the Zakat Fund in 5 Months
Source: Al-Bayan Newspaper, Saturday, 06/19/2010 The revenues of the Zakat Fund reached 10.807 million dirhams collected from 752 people, during the first five months of this year. The revenues of the Zakat Fund were paid by 58 Zakat payers who paid 2.644 million dirhams directly to the Fund, 581 Zakat payers who paid 7.674 million dirhams to bank accounts, 4 companies which paid 325526 dirhams, 67 people who paid 155 thousand dirhams through electronic payment, and 42 people who paid 7983 dirhams through the Mobile net.
In a statement to Al-Bayan, Abdullah Bin Oqeidah Al-Muheiry, Secretary General of the Zakat Fund stated: The revenues increased significantly during the past period, reaching 8.587 million dirhams during the first three months of this year, and rising by 26% during April and May, thanks to the multiple ways of Zakat collection, made available to the Zakat payers, including direct payment to the Fund, depositing in banks, electronic payment, and payment through the mobile phones.
He added that the Fund is pursuing a policy of transparency to keep the Zakat payers informed of the methods of distribution. Therefore, we communicate with the Zakat payers through several means, including paying visits to the major Zakat payers, their Highnesses the Sheikhs, the senior statesmen, businessmen, and other figures. We also send periodic reports, messages, informative files, and adopt other means of communication with all Zakat payers, to explain the projects and services the Fund is undertaking, and acquaint them with the legal channels of Zakat distribution through follow-up by the legal committee, which comprises some of the senior scholars and sheikhs in the State. This enhances the Zakat payers' trust in the Fund, and increases the revenues of the Fund. Al-Muheiry added: The Fund is working to develop plans and strategies that will raise Zakat awareness among all classes in the society to increase the Fund's revenues. We also make use of massive media campaigns, and organize special visits to Their Highnesses, the Sheikhs of the Emirates to enhance the position of the Fund and submit to them the new projects and initiatives. He further pointed out that the Fund is visiting merchants, dignitaries, and corporations, and is currently executing the programs of ATMs deployment in more than one site throughout the United Arab Emirates, aiming to facilitate the calculation and collection of Zakat for the public in malls. Add to these the annual successful experience of the Ramadan media and advertising campaign, which helps increase revenues, besides many other marketing projects. The Secretary-General of the Zakat Fund added that despite its short history, the Zakat Fund has become a referential authority on the national and international levels, and it receives visits from many Zakat foundations and organizations worldwide, which started providing their services many years before us. However, they desire to benefit from our experiences, which we have gained and developed, and from our modern technological ideas. He also pointed out that there is a gap between Zakat revenues and the number of potential payers in the UAE, explaining that their Zakat can help eliminate poverty within the State, and that the Zakat is a must-pay obligation for all those who possess the liable amount of wealth, who should hasten to pay it to feel the pleasure granted by Allah in this world and the Hereafter. The Secretary-General of the Zakat Fund further stated that there is no complete database of the potential Zakat payers on the State level, but the Fund has a database of the individuals and institutions paying their Zakat to the Fund, and the Fund communicates with them through quarterly and final reports, which the Fund sends to them to acquaint them with the channels of Zakat distribution, for the purpose of transparency. Al-Muheiry stated that after five years of the Zakat Fund foundation, the Fund has contributed to improving the services and charitable projects, along with increasing the monthly allocations to the beneficiaries up to 6 thousand dirhams a month, to help the needy become self-sufficient and to achieve the great wisdom of Zakat. Al-Muheiry added that coordination with the other societies and charities would continue in a professional way, throughout the UAE, because it contributed to expanding the scope of charity work throughout the State, and alleviating the suffering of many families from among citizens and foreigners alike.
