This year, the Zakat Fund initiated one of the important new projects in the State on the Zakat work level within the framework of its strategic plan, under the name “University Students Project” to offer university scholarships for 50 students from among the children of citizens and residents living in the UAE.
A four-year grant will cost 250 thousand dirhams, in which case, according to our operational plan based on our strategic plan, the expenses of fifty grants to fifty students for four years will amount to 10 million dirhams, besides the differences caused by students attending five-year program faculties, which makes the final budget of five groups of students 62.0005 million thousand dirhams.
The Zakat Fund, the federal government foundation, the tradition of generosity founded by the late/Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the development process led by the UAE leader, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, may Allah protect him, presents a charitable social project proving that it is a source of security and well-being for all those living on the land of prosperity, the United Arab Emirates.
After presenting a range of successful projects: "the Poor and Needy", "Read", "Reward and Recovery", "the Debtors", "the Prisoners Families", and "Affection" besides cooperation with charity and social development institutions, this year the Zakat Fund presents the project: “the University Students”, within the poor and needy channel of Zakat distribution, which aims to help university students who cannot afford the fees, to complete their studies.
For more details on this project and its goals, we interviewed His Excellency Abdullah Bin Oqeidah Al-Muheiry, Secretary-General of the Zakat Fund, who stated: The well-being of all people living in the UAE is a key objective, which we seek to enhance, and we need all the enlightened minds desiring to improve themselves and their country. We derive motivation from our religion, as the first command to the Prophet, peace be upon him was: “Read!” The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, also said:
“Whoever relieves a Muslim of a difficulty of life, Allah will relieve him of one of his difficulties on the Day of Resurrection; whoever gives an insolvent respite, Allah will facilitate his affairs in this world and in the Hereafter; and whoever covers a believer’s shortcoming Allah will cover his shortcomings in this world and in the Hereafter. Allah will also help a servant as long as he helps his brother, and whoever follows a path to knowledge, Allah will facilitate his way to Paradise.” Therefore, we have decided to help excellent students complete their university education and achieve their ambitions, by paying their university fees, after approval of the Distribution Committee which I chair, and which study all the cases to decide on those, which deserve the grant in accordance with the conditions and regulations.
Al-Muheiry explained that the most important conditions to be met by an applicant for the scholarship provided by the Zakat Fund are: Obtaining 80% at least in the high school from a school within the UAE, admission in a recognized university within the UAE, having no other grants or scholarships whether inside or outside the UAE, the university education program being no more than four or five years, and achieving a cumulative grade “very good” throughout the years of study, as an incentive for students to keep up excellence.
Abdullah Al-Muheiry further explained that the value of the grant covers a full scholarship for all years of study without exceeding fifty thousand dirhams a year, and the student’s family shall bear any extra amounts. He added that the grant may be canceled in case of violation of the grant’s general conditions: violation of any of the conditions of the scholarship or any undertaking signed by the student and his father, changing the university without prior authorization from the Fund, changing the specialization without prior permission from the Fund, achieving a cumulative average less than “very good” in one of the semesters in accordance with the grant rules, failing to attend the semester, and in case the University decides to cancel the admission for any reason.

Concerning the aim behind offering the grant, the Secretary-General of the Zakat Fund stated: The university grant idea emerged due to our concern for the excellent students whose economic circumstances may stop them from completing their education, causing the society to lose the capabilities of one of its outstanding sons, who could have become a first-rate doctor or engineer benefiting our nation. We also aim to convert some of the cases to Zakat payers in the future. He also pointed out that the grant is not limited to citizens but is also available to eligible non-citizens, and 29 cases were accepted during 2010 first quarter, including students from Syria, Jordan, 8 from Yemen, 7 from the Sudan, 3 from Palestine, 3 from Somalia, one from Iraq, Egypt, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. According to our operational plan for this year, we will accept fifty students.
Abdullah Al-Muheiry extended his thanks to all educational institutions, which cooperated with the Fund by offering discounts on their fees, or through the additional grants provided to the Fund, and called on institutions, corporations and individuals, and all charitable people to participate with the Fund to continue this large charitable project.
He added: As we have presented the "Read" project to help school students, today we continue our process of excellence in the service of Zakat. When we discovered that our society needs similar projects after we found that the dreams of many of our children, are shattered on the rock of economic resources, we decided to secure them, and be the port from which the ship of science sets out protected by Zakat, the shelter of well-being for all needy Muslims.
The vision of the Zakat Fund is based on its leadership and excellence in the service of the Zakat duty by spreading awareness of it, accepting its revenues and developing them, then spending them on the legitimate recipients for achieving social development in the UAE, and expanding the charitable work scope to cover the entire UAE.
