Zakat Fund and Red Crescent Start Distributing Zakat to Zakat Worthy in Different Parts in the Country

Abu Dhabi, on November 10th, 2004

Zakat Fund and the Red Crescent started distributing Zakat money among a thousand families all over the country. Zakat distributed amounted to 2.300 million Dirhams.

Sana' Darwish Al Kibty, Red Crescent Secretary General, assured that this project is the outcome of joint cooperation and coordination between both of the Red Crescent and Zakat Fund in charitable work. She expressed her appreciation for the trust the Fund placed in the Red Crescent to distribute Zakat money, raised by the Fund, through the former’s legal channels.

She said that the foundation of Zakat Fund is a great contribution to boost social compassion and solidarity. She assured that the Red Crescent will spare no effort to reinforce cooperation with the Fund, to serve joint goals, and achieve their prospects, to emphasis the significance and virtues of the obligation of Zakat in the society. She added that the authority got effective means to be a link between the rich and the poor.

The Red Crescent’s Secretary General revealed that the Red Crescent Authority set a new plan to distribute raised Zakat money to beneficiaries in different regions in the country. She pointed out that they have recruited their personnel at the headquarters of Abu Dhabi, side by side with those at the other branches all over the country, to fulfil this project, giving Zakat money to its beneficiaries, during this blessed month of Ramadan. They still have enough time to provide the needy families with their needs before the advent of Eid Al-Fitr.

She declared that, through its branches all over the country, the Red Crescent is going to distribute, to the poor, the following amounts of Zakat money: 450 thousand Dirhams allocated for Abu Dhabi, 450 thousand Dirhams for Al Ain city, 150 thousand Dirhams for both of Dubai and Ash-Sharja Emirates, 200 thousand Dirhams for Ajman Emirate, and 450 thousand Dirhams for both of Al Fugaira and Ras Al Khaima Emirates.

His Excellency Abdullah Aqeida Al-Mhairi, Zakat Fund Secretary General, confirmed that the Fund is a categorical step in charitable work. He said that the assistance the Fund received from the state helped it with, rapidly, fulfilling its mission and accomplishing its great objectives. He pointed out that the Fund's administration decided to cooperate and coordinate with the Red Crescent through their first joint project to distribute Zakat money through legal channels. This is the fruit of the Fund's good reputation and hard working among targeted classes of the community.

Al-Mhairi said that the Fund is looking forward to a more effective cooperation with the Red Crescent, carrying out more joint charitable projects. This is alongside exchanging information to benefit from the Red Crescent long and rich experience on the level of Zakat collection and distribution.

In this respect, Al-Mhairi praised the support the Fund receives from Zakat payers and their interaction with its programmes. He expressed his appreciation for the authorities which extended help assistance to the Fund at the beginning of its charitable mission.

Minister of Justice Heads Zakat Fund Board of Directors’ Meeting

His Excellency, Muhammad Bin Nkhaira Az-Zahiri, Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, headed Zakat Fund Board of Directors' meeting held yesterday.

His Excellency, Abdullah Bin Aqeida Al-Mhairi, Zakat Fund Secretary General, said that the Board discussed the achievements of the main committee, on one side, and the general plans of the Fund's first media campaign, which started on current Sha'ban 6th and would last till next Sha'ban 6th, to collect Zakat money, on the other side. He added that the board had discussed the idea of setting cooperation mechanism with different authorities working in charity to help the poor and the needy.

He mentioned that the U.A.E. Zakat Fund will participate in the Gulf Zakat Funds meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, in Riyadh, to discuss the Zakat Funds mechanisms and enhance cooperation, coordination and joint charitable efforts among them.

He explained that, during the next phase, the Fund is going to draw the attention of their Excellencies, Rulers of the Emirates, Sheikhs, high ranking officials, businessmen and public and private sector companies to Zakat Fund’s goals and role. This goes along with highlighting the role of Zakat Fund’s first campaign intended for collecting Zakat money through mass media and Masjids.

He explained that Zakat Fund is an independent federal authority. It works on emphasizing the importance of Zakat in society and collecting and investing its recourses in order to distribute it to its worthy, according to Islamic legal rulings.

He, also, noted that the Fund would benefit from Muslim scholars’ efforts to introduce the Fund to people, and encourage associations, authorities, companies and Islamic banks to cooperate with it.

Al-Mhairi added that, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Fund intends to organize, in November, specialized training course on Zakat accounting. The courses are aimed at financial managers and accountants, at authorities and companies, as well as chartered accountants at Islamic banks. The course is going to be organized by Experts.

He, also, said that both of Zakat Fund and a certain United Arab Emirates media institution agreed upon preparing special programmes about Zakat in 30 episodes to be transmitted during Ramadan. The episodes are intended to host many Muslim scholars, to talk about Zakat. Sheikh Abdullah Al Ga'fary is going to participate, in the episodes, through explaining the concept of Zakat. In this concern, also, eminent writers will be encouraged to write about it.

He ,at last, hinted that the Fund would launch the new service of ‘Yas'alounak An Az-Zakat’ (asking about zakat) through the Fund’s toll free phone service, through which a selection of well-known scholars answer callers queries about the obligation of Zakat. He added that the Fund’s website is going to be launched as well.

Gulf Countries’ Zakat Funds Chairmen Meeting

Ash-Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Zakat Fund Discuss Joint Cooperation

Ash-Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed Zakat Fund’s co-operation in strengthening its relations with the private sector authorities, in the Emirate of Ash-Sharjah, in the context of joint co-operation to introduce the Fund and its noble goals.

His Excellency, 'Ubaid Al Garawan, General Director of the Chamber, met His Excellency Abdullah Bin Aqeida Al-Mhairi, Zakat Fund Secretary General. The meeting, held in Ash-Sharjah today, was attended by Mr. Khalid Bitti Bin 'Ubaid, Assistant of the International Affairs General Manager of the Chamber, at the Global Commercial Club.

The nature of Zakat Fund services and activities, which go down to many social categories, establishing charitable projects, providing expenses according to Zakat legal channels, were discussed.

During the meeting, different points of views, about the available ways and aspects of co-operation between the Chamber and Zakat Fund, to sponsor enlightenment informative programmes, which aim to strengthen the relationships among both of the Fund’s and the Chamber’s affiliated members, such as businessmen and institutions, were also discussed. This is meant to achieve the noble objectives, which the two sides hope to accomplish, to serve the whole community, in general, and the needy categories, in particular.

The two sides showed that they are ready to reinforce joint co-operation through carrying out multi-sided informative and enlightenment programmes and organizing joint meetings and seminars. Such joint meetings and seminars are intended to help with spreading the significance of Zakat and its humanitarian and social outcome, which will benefit the whole community on both of the public and the individual levels.

The two sides agreed on coordination to set down a mechanism for implementing the joint co-operation programmes, and provide support from both of the Chamber’s and Zakat Fund’s Board of Directors. This is in addition to the possibility of setting a strategy draft for cooperation and understanding between the two sides. In the meeting, they discussed their, both current and future, mutual projects, as well.

Zakat Fund and Lebanese Zakat House Discuss Enhancing mutual Cooperation

Zakat Fund Board of Directors' Third Meeting

Zakat Fund Board of Directors held its third meeting today. The meeting was presided over by his Excellency Muhammad Bin Nkhaira Az-Zahiri, Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, and Chairman of the Fund’s Board of Directors, at the Fund headquarters in Abu Dhabi. His Excellency Abdullah Bin Aqeida Al-Mhairi, Fund's Secretary General, in his statement after the meeting, said that the Fund's organizational framework proposal which has been prepared by the foundation committee has been ratified. It comprises four departments; they are: Zakat Worthy Department, Zakat Resources, Finance Department and Department of Human Resources and Services. Zakat Fund and Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs held a meeting today at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi.
