Yesterday, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Abu Dhabi witnessed opening the seventh course on the contemporary applied aspects of the Zakat jurisprudence and accounting organized by the Zakat Fund in coordination with the Chamber, and attended by 150 participants from various government and private institutions.
The General Secretary of the Zakat Fund, His Excellency Abdullah Bin Oqeidah Al-Muheiry stated that this course comes in the framework of the activities of the fifth media campaign launched by the Zakat Fund since the eighteenth of this month, and which will last until the end of holy month of Ramadan.

The Zakat Fund invited companies and government and private banks to participate in the seventh specialized course on the contemporary practical aspects of the Zakat jurisprudence and accounting, to be organized soon by the Zakat Fund in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Abu Dhabi.
His Excellency, the General Secretary of the Zakat Fund Abdullah Bin Oqeida Al-Muheiry stated that the course will start on August 24, over five days, and will address the theoretical and practical contemporary aspects of the Zakat jurisprudence and accounting as a pillar of Islam.
82650 visitors paid their Zakat through the mobile phone service.

The use of mobile phone service in the calculation and payment of Zakat launched by the Zakat Fund achieved great success, which highlights the goals of the Fund, on the national level. The number of the users of this service has reached 82650 visitors, and the amounts collected 76823 dirhams, paid by 71 Zakat payers. This unprecedented step came within the framework of Zakat Fund plans in developing the means of calculating and collecting Zakat to reach the target base by using the latest technological means, for documenting Zakat performance, and disseminating Zakat among the members of the society.
The Zakat Fund offers one million and one hundred fifty thousand dirhams to students in the educational districts, within the framework of the Iqra (Read) project during 2008
In the framework of the Fund strategy of cooperation and coordination with local and international bodies and institutions concerned with Zakat and social work, and realizing the objectives of the Fund, the Zakat Fund continued the Iqra (read) project, which was launched in 2005, and has since then provided support for nearly 10,000 students at $ 15 million dirhams during the past years. The project aims at improving the standard of living of the categories of beneficiaries. Yesterday morning, the Zakat Fund has presented checks with the value of 1151370 dirhams to the educational departments of Al-Ain, Al-Fujairah, and Umm Al-Quwein, and the Authority of Knowledge and Human Development in Dubai. This took place at the Fund headquarters in Abu Dhabi, and the said amount will be distributed to 399 students to help them pay their school fees for 2007 - 2008.
The Zakat Fund delegation reviews the experience of the Zakat and Income Authority in Saudi Arabia concerning the Zakat as an Obligatory Duty
A delegation of the Zakat Fund under the chairmanship of His Excellency Abdullah Bin Oqeidah Al-Muheiry, General Secretary of the Zakat Fund; Mr. Jamal Khalaf Al-Mazru'i Manager of the Department of Zakat Resources and Information; Mr. Muhammad Sulayman Al-Balushi, Manager of the Legal Affairs Office, and the Organizational Excellence Office; and a number of employees, visited the headquarters of the Zakat and Income Authority at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The visit aimed at reviewing the experience of the Authority in the implementation of the obligatory Zakat, on the part of company and establishment sector in Saudi Arabia, with a view to adopting same strategy by the Fund on the part of the UAE companies and establishments with Islamic nature.
The Third Regular Meeting of the Zakat Fund Board of Directors
His Excellency Dr. Hadif Bin Jaw'an Al-Dhahiry, the Minister of Justice, and Chairman of the Zakat Fund, presided the third regular meeting of the board of directors, attended by the members of the board of directors and His Excellency Abdullah Bin Oqeidah Al-Muheiry, General Secretary of the Zakat Fund, where the board reviewed the report of the Secretariat for the first quarter of this year. The report addressed several issues, notably the development of institutional capacities of the Fund, which included increasing the number of citizen staff in the Zakat Fund, the staff training plan, and a plan of attracting qualified human cadres, which include rapid recruitment of cadres in the Department of Zakat Recipients Affairs, which is expected to start work as early as the beginning of 2009 according to the management operational plan.

Four employees in the Zakat Fund resign because of low salaries

Four members from among the 25 employees in the Zakat Fund resigned because of their low salaries compared to their colleagues in other authorities. Abdullah Al-Muheiry, General Secretary of the Fund stated that they are not to be blamed for resigning or seeking to improve their living conditions, pointing out the existence of attractive financial offers in the local authorities in Abu Dhabi.

The General Secretary of the Zakat Fund Abdullah Bin Oqeidah Al-Muheiry stated to Al-Emirat Al-Yawm newspaper that the Fund will increase the maximum of the Zakat amounts distributed to the beneficiaries to enable them stand the ever growing living costs, and a committee has been formed for this purpose. He added that the Fund’s regulation identifies the categories of the Zakat beneficiaries as being the families suffering from incurable financial problems, mainly: the poor and needy. Theses include the people with very low incomes, orphans, widows, divorcees the elderly, the sick, students, the unemployed, the families of missing people and prisoners, the people with special needs, and abstinent families and those with crushing calamities.

Draft Amendment to the Law of the Foundation of the Zakat Fund to Oblige Banking Institutions and Islamic Corporations Transfer 2.5% of their Profits to the Fund

Abdullah Bin Oqeidah Al-Muheiry General Secretary of Zakat Fund stated that the Fund has received a resolution from the Ministerial Council of Services asking to amend the Fund law No. 4 of 2003, to oblige the banking institutions and Islamic companies in the UAE transfer 2.5% of their profits to the Zakat Fund, with effect from the end of the current fiscal year. He explained that the amendments to the law include the formation of a committee to decide on the grievances that may follow the resolution if it is approved by the Cabinet, pointing out that there are about 60 Islamic corporations, companies and banks in the UAE.
